3. Digital submissions
You can also contact us by electronic means (e-mail, fax or online form), but please note the technical requirements. Any matters submitted by electronic means outside our office hours will only be received and processed when our office staff resume work again. This means that the submission will be deemed to have been submitted and received only at that time.

Description

The Steiermärkische Landesarchiv (Styrian Archives) with some 60,000 shelf metres of archival material is the biggest Austrian archive. Its material ranges from the 9th century to recent times.

Tasks

The Steiermärkische Landesarchiv collects and preserves the written and pictorial sources of the history of Styria and keeps them accessible. 

The use of the archives is subject to user rules. The archive material can be consulted by anyone during the opening hours of the reading rooms.

A scientific advisory service has been set up to advise the users of the archives. Our online guide provides information on questions related to the use of the archives.

 The services of the Styrian Archives include professional storage and management of the valuable archive material as well as advice for the public and administrative departments in the following areas:

  • Research (historical regional and cultural studies, sources, literature references)
  • Archiving techniques (storage technique, organisation of documentary material)
  • Archive protection (preservation, restoration, hygiene)
  • Archive information management
  • Exhibition technology
  • Reproduction technology
  • Heraldry (municipal coats of arms)

The structure of the archive collections reflects the major fields of collection: official and private written and pictorial sources from the beginning of written tradition to recent times and various collections.

The Styrian Archives publish several series of publications within the framework of its research assignment regarding regional and culture studies.  The Styrian Archives include a restoration workshop, a manual book bindery and a reprography & media conversion studio.

 The headquarters of the Styrian Place Name Commission are located in the Styrian Archives. The staff of the scientific archive services are represented there.
