The Styrian Forests are located in the north of Styria between the towns of Admont, Hieflau and St. Gallen. Currently, they cover an area of approximately 28,300 hectares.
The property also includes the Gesäuse mountain range where the first Styrian National Park was established in the year 2002. Only about 15,800 ha of the property are woodland and about 11,000 ha are wasteland (rocks).
Despite the difficult economic framework conditions for forestry operations in this extremely mountainous part of the country, the operations are very successful thanks to the very prudent management.
Some 32,000 cubic metres of timber are harvested annually in the forests owned by the State. The Styrian Forests are not only an important economic factor in this economically weakly structured region, they also secure some 40 jobs for forestry personnel and forestry workers, and also offer business for many companies as well as an additional source of income for farmers. Hunting provides for added economic success where forest operations and game populations exist side by side.
